MERCY VOLUNTEER CORPS COMMISSIONING
by Dot McAvay

On August 10, 2002, 37 volunteers completed a week of orientation at Gwynedd Mercy College culminating in a commissioning liturgy into the Mercy Volunteer Corps. Former volunteers pinned each new member at this very memorable event. Representing our regional leadership were Sisters Anna Saltzman, RSM and Eileen Lowden, RSM. Three women from New Jersey will serve as Mercy Corps Volunteers this year.

Pat McCormack, from Brick, NJ, is starting her second year as a teacher in St. Charles Apache Mission, San Carlos, AZ. Pat remarked, "Knowing more about the people and their culture, I hope that I will be able to increase my contribution to their needs."

Mary Regan, from East Brunswick, NJ, graduated from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in June 2002. Mary stated, "My motivation for becoming part of Mercy Volunteer Corps comes from the desire to challenge myself to devote an entire year of my life to something that is not self-serving." Mary will direct the Education Outreach Program at St. Francis Xavier Church in Manhattan, NYC.

Margy Kennedy is from Collingswood, NJ, and will be at The Learning Bank in Baltimore, MD, serving as a coordinator of volunteers and fund-raising assistant. Margy has taken a one-year sabbatical from her position as an analytical chemist to serve in the Mercy Volunteer Corps. She said, "I have considered long-term volunteer service for years, and believe that now is the time for me to use the talent God has given me."
