Sister Joann Burzichelli, RSM
This story was originally published in March 2005.
Who would ever have thought that my journey through public education would have led me to become a Sister of Mercy! Having read the stories of other Sisters in Connections, I see that God, mysteriously and beautifully, has led each of us to Mercy.
As a child I attended CCD classes on Sunday mornings at St. John’s Parish in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Sisters Mary Laura, Gregory, and Colman taught me. In later years, after I became a Sister of Mercy, they would say, “Joann, isn’t God’s grace wonderful?!”
After I graduated from high school, I became the school secretary at St. John’s School. During those few months, I enjoyed spending time with Sisters Mary Cosmas, Mary Clarita, Mary Trinita, and Mary Victor. Their witness to Mercy and their encouragement, along with times of shared prayer and fun, all inspired me to enter the Sisters of Mercy.
My mother sent me off with her blessing, but my father had difficulty accepting my choice. However, as time went by, he became proud to be the father of a nun!
Our band was the group most involved with the many changes in the Church and in religious life. After three years at the Mount, I was sent off to St. Matthew’s in Edison, New Jersey. Sister M. Patricius invited me to join her for a ride on the merry-go-round at the parish carnival. Later on, I would tell her that I was on a merry-go-round ever since!
I spent many years as a teacher and then as a principal.
In the late 70’s, we were invited to join a committee to enhance our community relationships. Sisters shared their stories of difficulties, but strong dedication to Church and community. It was during this time that my own spiritual journey was nourished.
Our committee began the McAuley Prayer Guild. I truly believe that the Sisters of the McAuley Hall Health Care Center have sustained my family and myself, and in many cases, have brought about miracles of healing!
In 1994 I left Catholic education and became Director of Religious Education for two parishes, St. Patrick’s in Woodbury, New Jersey, and St. John Vianney in Deptford, New Jersey. In June of 2004, after ten years of service, I retired from working at St. John Vianney Parish. I continue to maintain my schedule at St. Patrick’s, where I am kept busy as a leader of prayer and coordinator of the Sacramental Preparation for the parents and children of St. Patrick School and the Parish CCD program. I also serve as Director of Religious Education at St. John’s in Paulsboro, where my spiritual journey began many years ago.
From 1996-2004, I had the privilege of serving on the Board of Trustees of Georgian Court University.
A few years ago, my nephew, Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli, invited me to lead the New Jersey State Assembly in prayer. It was a singular honor! This truly was an invitation to bring the Sisters of Mercy to our legislative branch of government!
At present I am in the unique position of living with my 97 year old mother. I do miss the many aspects of community that enrich us, but, for now, I am enjoying quality time with my dear mother. I remain connected with Sister Mary Lucy Beal, Sister Mary Anton Frick, and Sister Dolores Patterson. We keep in touch through prayer and sharing.
I have been truly blessed as I have traveled on my life’s journey from childhood to adulthood!
Let us hold each other in prayer and maintain our contacts as we remain in the Circle of Mercy!
